India is reviewing its proposal to impose duties in response to US tariffs on steel and aluminum in accordance with World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. This was reported by Mint.
Trump’s tariffs on imports of the relevant products have damaged Indian exports worth $7.6 billion, and the amount of duties for these goods will be $3.82 billion, India reported to the WTO.
The request was made in response to the US raising tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%. India reserves the right to adjust the goods and tariff rates.
The proposed suspension of concessions or other commitments by India may take the form of increased tariffs on certain goods originating in the United States.
In May, the country proposed imposing corresponding duties on certain US goods under WTO rules to counter US tariffs on steel and aluminum. At that time, it was noted that the amount of duties levied on Indian imports of metal products amounted to $1.91 billion.
The latest proposal came amid trade negotiations between the parties. The Indian team is expected to visit Washington next week, and the talks will cover both temporary and broader bilateral agreements.
In the first two months of the 2025/2026 financial year (April-May), India reduced its imports of rolled products by 27.6% year-on-year – to 0.9 million tons. Rolled steel exports for the period decreased by 18.1% year-on-year to 0.8 million tons, with Belgium becoming the country’s largest export market.
